Bachelorette star Katie Thurston received the shocking news from her doctors in February that she had breast cancer. However, it turns out they misdiagnosed her. Keep reading to find out why she’s taking legal action.

Bachelorette Star Reveals Cancer Misdiagnosis

Katie Thurston has breast cancer. That much she knows for sure. However, the severity of it was thrown into doubt after conflicting test results. The results she got at a doctor’s office in California said the reality star had HER2+ breast cancer.

But after moving to New York City with her new husband, she changed doctors. The new doctors did the testing again and found different results. The second set of tests showed Katie Thurston’s cancer as HER2-.

The treatment options for the different biopsy results vary drastically. The preferred treatment method for HER2+ breast cancer is chemotherapy. In fact, Katie Thurston was literally on the way to start chemo when her doctors discovered the test discrepancy.

The reality star has a new treatment plan that involves oral therapy (pills) instead of chemotherapy.

How Misdiagnose Changed Treatment Plan

Not needing chemo is a huge win for Katie Thurston amid her breast cancer battle. However, the initial diagnosis of the more aggressive cancer made her treatment plans much more urgent.

After the first diagnosis, the Bachelorette alum began the egg retrieval procedure for IVF. She’s always been on the fence about having kids, but it’s something she and her husband, Jeff Arcuri, are seriously considering.

But chemotherapy often interferes with fertility. So Katie immediately began the IVF journey. She previously revealed that carrying a child herself is too risky with her breast cancer diagnosis.

In an Instagram Q&A, Katie Thurston revealed how the misdiagnosis affected her decision to do IVF. She said that she did the egg retrieval so quickly because she thought she needed chemotherapy.

Her misdiagnosis actually works in her favor regarding IVF. She said that she likely would have done IVF in the future anyway because pregnancy is risky for her health. Katie added that now that she doesn’t need chemo, they could possibly do another egg retrieval in the future. Whereas she wouldn’t have been able to do it again after chemo.

Katie Thurston Seeks Legal Action

The Bachelor Nation star is probably relieved that the original test that came back as HER2+ breast cancer was wrong. However, she wants to find out how that happened. She never had chemotherapy after the misdiagnosis, so why is she potentially seeking legal action?

She took to her Boobie Broadcast channel to address why she filed a grievance against health company Kaiser. She said that she wants to find out how the misdiagnosis happened so it doesn’t happen to other patients.

The misdiagnosis was due in part to their initial testing, which did not include a PET scan. It was only after she got the scan in New York that doctors discovered spots on her liver.

She said that she made a lot of medical decisions based on the test results from Kaiser, including doing IVF and getting a port for chemo. She now has to get the port removed.

Do you think Katie Thurston might have a legal case against Kaiser? Sound off in the comments.
