Bachelorette star Katie Thurston was only diagnosed with breast cancer a few months ago. But she shared signs that she’s deteriorating.
Cancer is a battle most people prefer to go through privately. Soap fans were shocked in September 2024 when actor Drake Hogestyn suddenly passed away. But it wasn’t sudden to those who knew him. He’d been battling cancer but chose not to go public with the diagnosis.
On the other hand, some people find the public support helpful. Bachelorette alum Katie Thurston is among the most vocal about her health struggles. The former reality star was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2025 at just 34 years old.

Bachelorette Star Explains Why She’s So Vocal About Health
Katie Thurston regularly shares updates on her Instagram Story or the Boobie Broadcast channel she uses to communicate with other cancer survivors. Katie has been open about all aspects of her breast cancer fight.
She was initially diagnosed with Stage 3 but new tests revealed that she was actually Stage 4. The Bachelorette star is exploring legal options after the shocking misdiagnosis. The initial diagnosis spurred her to immediately start IVF so she could potentially have biological children in the future with her husband, Jeff Arcuri.
The couple only started dating last year but got engaged over the summer. They eloped in March. In a new interview with Health.com, she said she wouldn’t have been able to get through the last few months without him.

The comedian postponed his tour to be there for his now-wife. Katie said, “Those first beginning stages of discovering your cancer and all the tests that go with it are the most important times to have a support system.”
Cancer – especially breast cancer – is a topic that was once taboo. It still is in some ways. In fact, she believes that she may have gone to the doctor sooner about the lump in her breast if someone in her circle had been vocal about breast cancer.
That’s why she’s been sharing so much about her own breast cancer journey. “I think we push it off as much as we can out of fear or not taking it seriously, but there is so much you can do for yourself by being proactive. Cancer itself is curable the earlier you detect it,” she said.
Her goal is to encourage her social media followers to “be their biggest advocate and be brave” when it comes to their health. She also wants to change the widespread belief that Stage 4 cancer is an immediate death sentence.
She’s Brutally Honest About Cancer
Katie Thurston isn’t afraid to share the good with the bad. For example, the change in her diagnosis meant that chemotherapy wasn’t necessary. At least not yet. Instead, she takes oral medication and gets an injection once a month.
She recently blasted online comments that she isn’t a ‘true’ cancer patient because she’s not having chemo. Even though she’s not getting chemo, her treatment still includes negative side effects.

Katie Thurston Talks Signs She’s ‘Deteriorating’ Amid Cancer Battle
In a new post to her Boobie Broadcast channel, Katie Thurston opened up more about some of the symptoms she’s experiencing. She recounted a recent incident with her husband. They were playing Tetris and he was offering tips on how to play. He told her to “go right” in the game but she went left instead.
She chalked it up to brain fog, which is a common cancer side effect. In a candid moment, Katie Thurston said that incident was one of many that made her feel like she was “deteriorating” amid her cancer battle.

A battle that’s just beginning. She wrote in the post that people who haven’t had cancer don’t realize that. In addition to consulting with a surgeon for a mastectomy, Katie Thurston has to have a scan in three months to find out if the treatment is working at all.
Despite having a long way to go in battling cancer, Katie Thurston is determined to come out the victor.
